Thanks for the suggestion. cifs works! Thank you!!

cifs also reveals that the filename in question contains non-ASCII
characters, which must have triggered the problem.
Under smbfs: PsyScience.cove.otes.031203.doc
Under cifs:  PsyScience.coveâ¦otes.031203.doc
