Here are some basic suggestions:

Make sure the user has read/write pemissions to use the directory. That is
he is either the OWNER of the directory or the member of a GROUP that has
access to the directory. Presuming you used useradd to create the user and
directory, this shouldn't be an issue. ls -al /home/(user) to confirm. chown
and chmod as required.

Make sure he has:
(1) a username and password on the unix box;
(2) the SAME samba username and password created with smbpasswd -a
(3) the SAME windows username and password
(4) that the winders box is using the client for microsoft networks for
login
