[Samba] bogus file sizes from samba shares

when I run du -sh or ls -s on a smb share, I get completely bogus file sizes,
512x as big as they should be. tried with samba 3.0.1 and 3.0.2a, both server
and client on 2.6, slackware 9.1.

example:

$ ls -1sh
302G 001.part*
327G 002.part*
355G 003.part*

but:

$ ls -lh
-rwxrwxr-x    1 dexter   users        603M 2004-01-19 19:32 001.part*
-rwxrwxr-x    1 dexter   users        653M 2004-01-19 19:32 002.part*
-rwxrwxr-x    1 dexter   users        710M 2004-01-19 19:32 003.part*
