[Samba] Logon Path Weirdness?

If I set logon path = \\%N\profiles\%U, Windows XP ends up storing the
profile in a directory called "profiles" in the users' home
directories.

If I set logon path= \\%N\profiles\%U\WinXP or logon path=
\\%N\profiles\%U\%m, Windows XP correctly stores the profile in a
directory called "WinXP" or <machine name> in the profiles share.

Am I not reading the documentation correctly, and this is actually the
expected behaviour, or is this - as I suspect - anomalous?

Hope someone can set me straight! :)
