This is my question - where can I find out about the properties of MYSQL
replication? I will suggest it is unsafe until I know it meets the
particular proprieties we require.

And will that propagate updates to the PDC on restoration, and what
happens if the PDC is just separated, but still operating?

I'm not 'anti' mysql, or silly things like that. However, there are
very particular requirements in how Samba interacts, that make LDAP a
very good choice. The availability of mature clients (such as nss_ldap)
and it's non-experimental status in Samba makes it the only choice I can
recommend.
