should normally have any more than one, but maybe I'm mistaken.  I've

So you're saying that in your ldap.conf you have things configured like so?
nss_base_passwd        dc=homelan,dc=com,dc=br?sub

Or is it just configured as ou=Users,dc=homelan,dc=com,dc=br?sub

If it's the former, I'd guess that isn't helping things out if you have 
more than the 3 base OUs you listed.

Assuming your ldap configuration is slowing you down a bunch, the 
openldap list could probably help you out on your tweaking to get it 
moving better, maybe with things like indexing, otherwise perhaps you 
need a dedicated ldap machine or some kind of load balancing.

Curious, how fast is an ldapsearch at peak time?  Hows the load on the 
machine look?
