[Samba] Samba start

Where could i be going wrong

I am having a problem starting my samba. 
I recently installed my Linux and Samba 3.0.5
I believe my Samba is installed correctly because I followed 
some guidelines. At the moment I have a problem with starting it up.
I followed the guidelines using the following commands.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start or service smb start
I got an error which read: file or directory not found.
I also tried using the other command.
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
I get the same error.
Where could i be going wrong please help.
