CUPS. libcups.so is linked into Samba (if configured with this
-- default -- option). CUPS is also much more advanced and
feature-rich than BSD.

Don't blame Samba for that....  ;-)

The reason is, that BSD-printing doesn't support much by itself.  ;-)
