[Samba] "home folder" v.s. regular drive mappings

Hey, has anyone on the list experienced the following behavior ?

When \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is specified as the "home
folder" in the AD user profile, XP takes a long time to open up "my
computer"

But when \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is mapped via a netlogon
script, XP opens "my computer" quickly

I've searched ms technet for clues to what may be occurring and didn't see
anything of interest.

The samba server and XP client are on different subnets, no IP filtering is
in place.

Could this be related to my [homes] section options by chance ?

[homes]
   browseable = no
   public = no
   comment = "%U home"
   guest ok = no
   read only = no
   valid users = %U
