I am seeing the same "slowdown" problem, and have found a couple of other
things.
The problem began for me after doing a CVS update and installing on the evening
of 7 Sep. Reverting to my previous build of 31 Aug eliminates the problem.
smbd is in constant run state, but strace shows no system calls.
A new smbd starts up every few minutes (as if XP is trying to reconnect) and
exhibits the same problems. The previous smbd processes continue to run.
I'm running XP Pro with latest updates. Samba is running on RH 7.2 and kernel
2.4.22.
