Always use Windex, not a waxy compound for the crystal balls.  :)

My samba server is set for wins support = yes.

I use dhcpd (version 3 some-odd) to assign ip addresses, gateways,
domain names and netbios servers. When I checked wins.dat, the windowsxp
machines did not have a"0x03" entry. (it did have 0x20 and 0x00) 
Neither of them. But the windowsme machine did. Also my openbsd machine
when I started smbd and nmbd had all three entries.

I have a feeling that I might have to do some type of configuration on
the XP machines in order to get them registered properly in my wins
server.  But I'm too lazy to check that out right now.  Because my
wife is sick and I have to cook dinner again.  If someone else
knows, I'd be happy to hear, but if I find out myself I'll announce it
to the list. Unless I'm totally wrong. In which case I'll go back to
lurking.

ps  I just added a

option netbios-node-type 8;

line to see if that would force a wins entry for the winxp machines.  It
didn't.  (8 seems to be hybrid, first try wins, then bcast).
