And what does the smbd log file say?

Your smbd logs can be under:
	/usr/local/samba/var/logs
or	/var/logs/samba

or something like it.

To make it easier to track you should add to your smb.conf [globals]
	log file = /var/log/samba/%m
This causes each Windows client to have it's own log file.
