all turns around the new red hat choice of i18n settings with utf8
i just couldn't have some consistent behaviour between windows/samba/linux

putting LANG=fr_FR (instead of fr_FR.UTF-8) in /etc/sysconfig/i18n solved
this problem
btw it also solved some others
