Rather disappointing what they did with it.

All is not lost, however. I have successfully used X-Setup from Xteq Systems 
(http://www.xteq.com/) to at least enable "domain participation" close to the 
level of a Win9x type system (not a "domain member").
Two drawbacks are that domain logon scripts are not run and auto-login is 
required; but since the PC's with XP Home on them belong to individuals and 
not the company (which wouldn't order an XP Home PC) the drawbacks are not 
serious and it allows them easy access to the shares on the domain without 
extra password entries.
