[Samba] CIFS/SMB question

Hello,
   I have a very basic query about CIFS. Do you need to hae CIFS support 
on the client machine too or does only the mount.cifs file suffice?
Also, when I try to mount a partition from a machine, I get this error:

[root at a1 /]# mount -t cifs //10.51.233.103:/homes /mnt/m1 -o user=balaji
Password:
mount error 22 = Invalid argumentRefer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
[root at a1 /]#
