I can't answer your questions directly, but how bout this....I tell you how
I'm using winbind and see if that helps!?

(bear in mind, I think my setup is simple and you CAN do a whole lot more
with samba/winbind - but this is what I have setup)

Basically,

I've got an NT4 Domain, a linux server and lots of WinNT/win2k clients.

I want to share a directory on the linux server, but I also want some people
to only have "read-only" rights and others to have "read-write"

I also don't want to have to create userids and passwords on the linux
server for each person/group that will need to use the share. So I need the
linux server, or at least samba to know about the domain users and grant
them right appropriately. Winbind communicates with the PDC in the Domain
and becomes "aware" of the users in the domain.

By having this capability, I don't have to setup new users/passwords, nor do
I have to have the users logon to the share (so long as they log into the
domain, Linux will know who they are).

So ultimately, you don't NEED winbind to do ANY sharing, but it sure makes
administration easier, and simplifies things for users since they don't need
yet ANOTHER userid/password combo.

I hope that makes sense....I also I hope I didn't bore you with things you
already know....

Samba On!

Dan

I would like to know what exactly does winbind do.?
(i have read the documentation but i am yet confused)

prior to having winbind incorporated in samba, there was smb, nmb doing the
authentication using samba server on linux.
so samba acted as file and print server + authentcation server for windows
clients including the NT server.

NT Server -----> Linux Server (Samba)

mswinclient1 mswinclient2 mswinclient3 etc.

so if we look at the above rough picture....
my all 3 mswinclients can do sharing to NT server as well as Linux having
samba. the ntserver can also do sharing to Linux having samba.

but what if have 1 NT server, 5 or even more (probably many) linux
workstations and also lots of MsWindows workstations

how do i do sharing between linux workstations and the MS windows clients
and the NT server.

does this mean that I have to install samba server on each and every linux
workstation.

also then what is the job of winbind.?
as far as the material i have read ... i can figure out that
a solution has come up by the samba team where the password authetication
that was done twice, for windows server as well as linux server has been
eliminated, thus making the samba server do no authentication any more,
while the NT server does the full fledged authentication.

is there anything more?

regards
