My own unscientific speed testing, back when we did our conversion, found that Samba was slightly faster than the NT4 server we replaced. The old server was on slower hardware, though, so it wasn't entirely a fair comparison. I timed copies of a large file to an NT4 Workstation client to test. I don't have the numbers anymore, sorry.
