[Samba] Specified User Does not exist ?

Hey all, 

I hope I'm missing something simple. This is my second PDC install and I'm having some problems getting my win2k machine to join the domain. First I made the machine account:

useradd -g 100 -d /dev/null -c "bob's computer" -s /bin/false office1$

Then I lock the password:

passwd -l office1$

Next I make the smbpasswd -am office1 name.

Finally, I added a smbpasswd for my root account. 

Then, I change the computer name to office1, reboot, and then try to join the domain with the root account and new smbpasswd.

I am receiving this error:
"The specified user does not exist"

I have tried everything I can think of, recreating the root smbuser, and everything. I have tried to find the answer in previous archives but am coming up blank. 

Any tips on this would be GREATLY appreciated.
