Dunno if that is good enough for you:

   "kill -HUP `pidof smbd`"

Or submit a bug report to http://bugzilla.samba.org/.
Or wait till it's fixed.

I agree it is a bug.

BTW -- I've written a very rough "add printer script" also.
Do you mind sending yours to me in exchange of mine?
(I didn't dare to publish mine yet, since I am a terribly
new into shell scripting....)
