fine on servers running samba-2.0.10-0.7 or samba-2.0.7-21ssl and RH
7.1.  I cannot access home directories and shares on a server running
samba-2.2.1a-20010711 and RH 7.1.  The RPM for the latter version
was homemade from the source tarball without any patches.

The earlier version of samba allows access but the later version keeps
failing with an bad username or password error.

The global and homes section of the smb.conf file are identical
(except for machine names) between the different servers:
