To the server from the local disk 7 mins 38 seconds
Copying from and two the samba server from nt/win2k clients is okay, I
didn't get a chance to get figures for this :/
I saw a post similar to this suggesting that it was a NIC problem and
that it was in full duplex mode? Im not sure I could check this on a dos
client. any suggestions?
We are using a 10mbit dumb hub.
The server that is running samba:

aid of performance yet, I don't think this would be causing the problems
with the dos client, so I would like to fix the dos client problem
before I actually start tweaking the config...
Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated, as I don't want to be forced to
switch back to NT4 server!

Yes Im replying to my own post, but just to add some additional info.
I mapped a share from a win2k workstation to a dos machine, and I
experience the same crap write performance :/ So this is not a samba
problem, but by chance, if someone has some good advice please let me
know! I don't want to have to change all the dos clients back to netbuie
and use a NT4 server!

As pleased as I am about seeing 2.2.1 released there's still an outstanding
bug which is preventing me from using it:
http://bugs.samba.org/?findid=21369 (reported over a month ago)
When copying a file from NT4.0 to samba server the file date/time is set to
the current time instead of the original file time. Not sure if this is
true for any other OS.
I would think this could break things for some people (like me).
I already identified what's causing the problem in the bug report and
thought that it wouldn't be too hard to fix but figured the samba team could
come up with a better fix than me.

This is a security bugfix release for Samba 2.2.0. This release provides the
following two changes *ONLY* from the 2.2.0 release.

Summary
-------
A serious security hole has been discovered in all versions of Samba
that allows an attacker to gain root access on the target machine for
certain types of common Samba configuration.
The immediate fix is to edit your smb.conf configuration file and
remove all occurances of the macro "%m". Replacing occurances of %m
with %I is probably the best solution for most sites.
Details
-------
A remote attacker can use a netbios name containing unix path
characters which will then be substituted into the %m macro wherever
it occurs in smb.conf. This can be used to cause Samba to create a log
file on top of an important system file, which in turn can be used to
compromise security on the server.
The most commonly used configuration option that can be vulnerable to
this attack is the "log file" option. The default value for this
option is VARDIR/log.smbd. If the default is used then Samba is not
vulnerable to this attack.
The security hole occurs when a log file option like the following is
used:
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
In that case the attacker can use a locally created symbolic link to
overwrite any file on the system. This requires local access to the
server.
If your Samba configuration has something like the following:
log file = /var/log/samba/%m
Then the attacker could successfully compromise your server remotely
as no symbolic link is required. This type of configuration is very
rare.
The most commonly used log file configuration containing %m is the
distributed in the sample configuration file that comes with Samba:
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
in that case your machine is not vulnerable to this attack unless you
happen to have a subdirectory in /var/log/samba/ which starts with the
prefix "log."

This is the official Samba 2.2.0 release. This version of Samba provides
the following new features and enhancements.
Integration between Windows oplocks and NFS file opens (IRIX and Linux
2.4 kernel only). This gives complete data and locking integrity between
Windows and UNIX file access to the same data files.
Ability to act as an authentication source for Windows 2000 clients as
well as for NT4.x clients.
Integration with the winbind daemon that provides a single
sign on facility for UNIX servers in Windows 2000/NT4 networks
driven by a Windows 2000/NT4 PDC. winbind is not included in
this release, it currently must be obtained separately. We are
committed to including winbind in a future Samba 2.2.x release.
Support for native Windows 2000/NT4 printing RPCs. This includes

On PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) based systems - better debugging
messages and encrypted password users now have access control verified via
PAM - Note: Authentication still uses the encrypted password database.
Rewritten internal locking semantics for more robustness.
This release supports full 64 bit locking semantics on all
(even 32 bit) platforms. SMB locks are mapped onto POSIX
locks (32 bit or 64 bit) as the underlying system allows.
Conversion of various internal flat data structures to use
database records for increased performance and
flexibility.
Support for acting as a MS-DFS (Distributed File System) server.
Support for manipulating Samba shares using Windows client tools
(server manager). Per share security can be set using these tools
and Samba will obey the access restrictions applied.
Samba profiling support (see below).
Compile time option for enabling a (Virtual file system) VFS layer
to allow non-disk resources to be exported as Windows filesystems
(such as databases etc.).
The documentation in this release has been updated and converted
from Yodl to DocBook 4.1. There are many new parameters since 2.0.7
and some defaults have changed.
Profiling support.
------------------
Support for collection of profile information. A shared
memory area has been created which contains counters for
the number of calls to and the amount of time spent in
various system calls and smb transactions. See the file
profile.h for a complete listing of the information
collected. Sample code for a samba pmda (collection agent
for Performance Co-Pilot) has been included in the pcp
directory.
To enable the profile data collection code in samba, you
must compile samba with profile support (run configure with
the --with-profile option). On startup, collection of data
is disabled. To begin collecting data use the smbcontrol
program to turn on profiling (see the smbcontrol man page).
Profile information collection can be enabled for all smbd
processes or one or more selected processes. The profiling
data collected is the aggragate for all processes that have
profiling enabled.
With samba compiled for profile data collection, you may see
a very slight degradation in performance even with profiling
collection turned off. On initial tests with NetBench on an
SGI Origin 200 server, this degradation was not measureable
with profile collection off compared to no profile collection
compiled into samba.
With count profile collection enabled on all clients, the
degradation was less than 2%. With full profile collection
enabled on all clients, the degradation was about 8.5%.

I've setup two samba 2.2-CVS server to play around with acl. Both
servers get their linux users via NIS, one server is pdc and has a
/etc/smbpasswd, the other server is just a file server and gets all user
data from the pdc (no winbind).
Both servers have 2.4.4 kernel with the acl-patches from
acl.bestbits.at, acl on ext2 works fine with linux on both servers.
If I change the acls on the pdc, everything is fine. Users can be added
and removed, access rights are modified, too.
On the file server you can change the rights for existing acl-entries
but you cannot add users to the acl within windows properties . If I
click "apply" on the panel, the acl resets to default entries, but with
the proper access rights. This happens with NT and W2k to both sundays
and todays cvs-version :-( However, if you add users with setfacl to a
file, you see them on the windows panel and you can modify access
rights.
Appended are some logs from the fileserver. I'm not a programmer, but
are there some problems in mapping linux and windows users?

Hi guys,
This may or may not have been solved before, I have trawled through endless
archives relating to this problem but so far I have had no success.
The Problem is we have a Samba served based on a remote network that we
access via an ISD2e connection. Although I can successfully connect to the
server via telnet or ftp when I try and connect to the samba share I keep
getting the same response. System error 53 has occurred. The network path
was not found.
The client is Windows NT 4.0 Sp6a and has two Ip addresses one for the local
LAN at our offices and one for the remote LAN (connected to via the ISD2e).

Hi,
does anyone have some experience with Samba and Appletalk ?
I want to configure Samba therefore i can access the files on the
server.
If someone already knows how to bring it up, please answer.
Of course I already compiled 2.2.0a --with-netatalk and got a Kernel
with appletalk to.

Hi,
My problem with Samba is:
smbpasswd command can not access /etc/secrets.tdb file to verify existing
password.
Consequently users are not able to change their samba passwords neither from
remote terminal nor from windows (while unix passwords are changed).
It seams that root has rw permission on that file.
My system is FreeBSD 4.3, Samba 2.2.0.
Could You help me?

Pardon the off topic solution.
It is because the internal field separator (IFS) is set to a space, a tab,
or a carriage return, so your while loop is splitting up the input on the
space. Put the following into your script in the while loop:
IFS="
"
where the first " is followed by only a carriage return and you should be
all set.

Hi all,
I've set up samba 2.2.0-alpha3 on my Linux box, and I set up a share,
/home/baruch. I set security=user, and encryption on. I also ran
smbpasswd for the user baruch.
I also have a Windoze 2000 box. I went to map a network drive on the
winbox to /home/baruch on the linbox. It then asked for a username and
password.
If I give it any username except 'baruch', I get a message saying the
user isn't valid, which is correct. However, if I give it the username
'baruch', then no matter what password I give it, the drive gets mapped.
Can anyone take a look at my smb.conf file and see what would cause this
behavior? Obviously I want the share to be password protected.

Hi Werner,
Yes, you should be able to join more than one domain from win2k workstation.
you can only be logged INTO one domain at a time, but if you join different
domains from the win2k "my computer", System Properties/Network
Identification/Properties screen, then when you log in, your gui should have
a pulldown list of the domains you have joined, and you can select which
domain you are logging into when you login to win2k.

I was wondering whether it it possible to add a Windows 2000 machine to
different Samba domains (samba 2.2.0). It seems to me that you cannot to
add the same W2K machine to several domains. I've created machine accounts
on two different Samba servers for the same W2K machine but I can only
choose ONE domain on the W2K machine.
Does anybody know whether this is possible?

Your config.guess and config.sub are *way* too old though. Attached is a
gzipped tar with some more recent versions (as shipped with gcc-3.0), but
newer versions are posted on the GNU mirrors quite regularly.
My HP-UX 11.00 system was recognized as hppa-1.0, where hppa-2.0w would be
much more appropriate.
After that update, the configuration and the make worked flawless. At the end
I've included the warnings. (Yes, I know ACL on HP-UX is still experimental).
So far, I've seen no failures. Win2k => HP-UX/samba-2.2.0a works great
I'd also like a configure option '--without-swat' do disable swat *completely*.
I'm not using it, and do not intend to. I like to keep my many smb.conf files
in sync manually. '--with-swatdir=/dev/null' doesn't help, because the install
process fails on creation of /dev/null as a directory. *I do NOT want swat*.
(For the time being, I've changed the makefile to skip swat.)

Hmm, I've tried your solution, but I cannot make it work.
My gui only lists the domain to which I added my win2k workstation the last
time. If I add the workstation to another domain and reboot, I can only
choose to login to the machine itself and to this new domain and not to the

In the Samba-HOWTO I've read that Samba 2.2.0 does not support Win NT
domain trusts. Could this be a possible cause of my problem?

Hi all,
I have installed Samba 2.2 with LPRng and have Windows NT 4.0
clients. With this set up I could configure network printer from NT
clients and printing also works fine.
I cannot see the full contents of the print queue from an NT
machine. Or in other words I cannot control/delete my job from Nt client.
I have inculded lpq and lprm commands is smb.conf file. Does this mean
that NT client is not able to recognize lpq output OR it is not possible
to do such thing.

Surely this is the wrong way around.
When you copy a file you _create a new file_.
When you move a file you just move its inode and all its
access/modified/create time gets moved with it.
Of course over a different fs or even network you do some pokery to set
the times to the times that they show on the original file.
Testing Samba 2.2.0 shows it is however doing what _you_ think it should
- which is IMHO wrong - at least it is not how a normal copy is
performed or how win2000 behaves taliking to another win2000 machine.

technicaly you are correct: copying creats a new file. But to my
knowlage Microsoft-OS's starting with DOS have never changed the time
of a file during copying. (DOS only knows the modification time?). On
the other side unix allways changes the modification time, unless
you supply the -p option. Historical difference, a matter of opinion,
...
Personnaly I'm used to this MS behaviour, and I like it: If I create
a backup copy of my thieses a want to see the date when I have
written it, not the date I made the backup. (Windows doesn't supply a
time option).
In the years of my usage of samba it has never changed the
modification time of a file during copying, thus simulating windows.
And I think it's good the way it is.
I haven't tried 2.2.1, but I would consider it a bug if it changes
the times.
May be add a parameter to smb.conf to controll this?

Okay, I've found the problem; a misconfiguration in the firewall
caused it to block ports 137-139 on both sides of the firewall; it
should block them only on the Internet side. doh!
Maibe you should add this in DIAGNOSIS.txt: if everything fails, try
to think of the most stupid thing that could prevent samba to work;
chances are this is the problem... 8)

discover the source of the problem,

In the WINS.dat file I see lotsa entries of workgroups and computers. I know
that WORKGROUP#1B is the DMB.. but what i'm curious about is the
COMPUTERNAME#xx entries, where xx=00/03/20. I have one computer that isn't
properly authenticating to the WINS server (because it has a complicated
connection); it doesn't get a #20, although it DOES get a #03 and #00.
Please can someone explain what #00 #03 and #20 refer to? Thanks!

I am having trouble connecting several Win2K machines to a new SAMBA server.
The error that I get when connecting is "system error 1240 has occurred.
The account is not authorized to log in from this station."
I have commented out the hosts allow - did not work
I specifically allowed in hosts - did not work
There are no log files in the log directory
Any help would be greatly appreciated. As I am not a subscriber to
the list please include my email (cbarber at estgsecurity.com) on your replies.

Hi Tim,
00 type is the standard workstation service
03 is the messenger service
20 is the fileserver(printserver) service;
So for instance, the computer that you mention below
is registering that it is running the workstation service,and the messenger
service (can accept winpopup messages), but it is NOT sharing out any files
or printers. You would get this kind of registration for instance if you
did NOT install the 'file and printer sharing or Microsoft networks'
component on a win2k professional system (you would still be able to attach
to other computer's file and print shares, but you wouldn't be able to share
out any of your own directories or locally attached printers)....
By the way, a list of the most common 'resource types' for netbios names can
be found on page 15 of the O'reilly "Using Samba" book...

Thanks for the reply. I do have all the file-sharing stuff installed on the
MS client, it has shared files that are set up properly (can double click on
itself in network neighborhood and see shared stuff); however due to the
fact it's connected via PPTP, it won't properly put a #20 entry in wins.dat.
Any ideas?

I am currently fighting with the following messages:

This response was from IP 141.43.132.161, reportingan IP address of 0.0.0.0.

141.43.132.161 is the WINS server (also a samba server).
Following the advice on this list, I checked that the server is not
dualhomed and also tried to hardcode the interface:
interfaces = 141.43.132.161/26
bind interfaces only = yes
but to now avail.
I have traced the packages and I clearly see two answers to one request
(that seem to be identical, BTW).
A level 5 trace of nmbd shows, that indeed the nmbd process thinks to
receive all requests twice...
