In our network we have one SAMBA server wich works perfectly! It's connected
to clients over two hubs (two offices in different rooms). But now we
changet one HUB with a SWITCH and in this room samba isn't accessble any
more. Is there any way to work out this problem ? We assume that new switch
is causing all the troubles but we do not want to replace it. It's a 24 port
SWITCH and takes a lot of burden off the rest of the network. Thanks for any

my problem is as it follows:
setup: samba 2.04b/linux 2.2.19 (I know, it's a old one)
I have five shares like that
xxxx-yyyyyyyy-aaa
xxxx-yyyyyyyy-bbb
xxxx-yyyyyyyy-ccc
xxxx-yyyyyyyy-ddd
xxxx-yyyyyyyy-eee
Browsing from the win98 clients it lists five entries
like 'xxxx-yyyyyyyy' (making them look alike)
Clicking on one of them pops up an error saying that
the share does not exist (it's true)
Doing a smbclient -L fileserver lists the shares the
same way 'xxxx-yyyyyyyy' (13 characters) so it's
server's fault for presenting the truncated shares
Note that the the shares get mapped ok from the
%user.bat that runs at logon; it just cannot be
browsed from network neighborhood...

Woo hoo! It finally compiled.
I configured with this command line;
./configure --with-automount --with-pam --with-winbind
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assumed (in my lack of experience) that I need
automount for the CDROM and with-pam so that winbind would work. I suppose
these only matter if I install the whole thing rather than just winbind.
Anyway, now I've just got to work out how to install the darn thing on my
server and on my clients.

Could someone clarify something for me. I am looking at samba to provide a
couple of user access to our Production UNIX servers. They need access so
that they can analyze some of the log files of processes that the are in
charge of. I don't, won't, can't give them root access to retrive these
logfiles. It was/is my hope that I can use samba to allow them to gain
access to these logfiles.
Please understand that I am very new with using samba and I could not find
my answers by looking in the archives. So here is what I am a little
confused about. If I want to share a file or directory from a UNIX/Lynix
server to a NT workstation, does samba have to be installed on that server.
Or is there some way to point samba to a server, other than the one samba is
installed on?

Try setting up the Samba server as a WINS server, and set the
WINS server address for all the windows client machines to the
Samba server.

Hi,
I got Winbind from CVS about 2 days ago. It compiled fine I have my
nsswitch.conf changed, pam files changed, smb.conf updated with uid, gid
etc.
I think I have a bug or else I am just trying to push Winbind too far. I
have 6 domains all trusting each other, samba is a member of one of them.
When I start winbindd with '-d 3 -i' I can see it adding trusted domains and
establishing connections - all looks fine.
However, when I try a './wbino -u' it lists the users of the first trusted
domain fine. The first domain has 8 users - but then it lists the following
domains all with the same 8 users when 2 of the domains have over 1500 and
over 300 accounts each.
Is this a bug ?
Oh and when I run 'getent group' - winbind core dumps.

There are PAM modules that attempt to do something like this, and there
is now PAM session support in CVS, for release in 2.2.1. Last I recall,
the modules usually used utmp to figure out if that user was already
connected, so you will probably also need --with-utmp and 'utmp = yes'.
Also, you will need 'obey pam restrictions = yes'.
Let me know how you go, or if you need some help, as this is exactly the
kind of reason I added this particular functionality in the first place.

My first guess would be that your machine is trying to do something over the
cable, like DNS lookups or similar which is hanging your Linux box when the
line goes down. I can't see anything that would cause Samba to do anything
silly in your conf file.
The other thing which occurs is that you may well not have a WINS server set
up. Set "WINS support = yes", and point your other machines at it for their
WINS services. This should give more stable browsing.
Does anything out of the ordinary show up in the log files during the
outage? If not, you might like to increase your debug level and reproduce
the problem again.

Hi,
I have two problems with Samba 2.2.0 running on a SparcClassic (for testing
purposes). I have compiled it with ACL-support on Solaris 8.
I'm running samba with security=domain and I'm using the WINS server of the
PDC
(SP 6a).
Problem 1: printer queue management.
I've installed a printer and made the upload of the printer driver, everything
is fine.
In the smb.conf there are the following entries:
printing: sysv
print command: lp -c -d%p %s; rm %s
lpq command: lpstat -o%p
lprm command: cancel %p-%j
lppause: lp -i %p-%j -H hold
lpresume: lp -i %p-%j -H resume
queuepause: disable %p
queueresume: enable %p
When a printer is stopped from a NT-WS, under NT you see in the header that
the
printer ist stopped and the entry in the menu is checked. If you uncheck the
entry, the printer is enabled. This works only for a printer that is attached
to a NT-WS.
When I try to stop a printer on the sambaserver, it is only possible to stop
the printer. You don't see the status of the printer and the entry in the menu
is not checked, so it is impossible to start the printer again from NT. This
works only as user=root, if I try this with another user there is an error
when
the command is processed. This seems to be ok, because the acl of the printer
is default set to full permissions for root and only printing for everyone.
But
when I change the permission for everyone to full permissions, the printer
command still don't work!
Is it possible to configure a printer on the sambaserver so that every user
can
execute the printer commands?
Problem 2: Modifying ACL for file/folder
When I try modify the ACL of a file or a folder through the permissions-tab,
it
takes very long (up to 30 seconds) until the window appears. The actual
permissions are displayed correctly. When I try to add a new permission, the
following error message occours: the selected domain can not be searched due
to
the following error. The list of the servers of this domain is present not
available.
In the header of the window, I can select the samba-server (i.e named asterix)
and a domain which has the same name as the sambaserver, but not the domain
the
sambaserver is in(i.e. solaris)
Why is it impossible to see the domain the sambaserver is a member of?
When I connect via rpcclient to the sambaserver, the correct domain is
displayed, which is the same of the NT-PDC. From the NT-PDC with "net view
/domain:solaris" the PDC and the sambaserver are displayed. In the
servermanager of the PDC, the sambaserver is not displayed as aktive when
setting the filter to "domainmember only", but I see the server when turning
off this filter.
What might be the problem for this behaviour? Obviously there is a search for
a
domain with the same name of the sambaserver which doesn't exist. Why and by
which machine is this search initiated?
Any suggestions for a solution?

Hi,
I'm following the instructions from
http://www.deschner.de/gd/dual_samba.html
on howto create a PDC for my NT/W2000 Network.
according to the discription the following should work and create a new IP
on my NIC.
> # ifconfig eth1:0 192.168.2.61 broadcast 192.168.2.255 netmask
255.255.255.0 up
> SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
> SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
> SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
What do the errors mean? because both the devices eth0 und eth1 do exist!
My kenelversion is 2.2.11 with SuSE 6.4 -
Do I need to follow a differant Syntax or utility? Or is my Kernel just too
old?
Hopfully someone has done this before!

Hi,
in the syslog file I repeatedly find the following messages:
Jun 8 08:19:40 wrpc3 smbd[8296]: [2001/06/08 08:19:40, 0] lib/debug.c:check_log_size(311)
Jun 8 08:19:40 wrpc3 smbd[8296]: check_log_size: open of debug file /var/log/smb failed - using console.
The file /var/log/smb has the following attributes:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1024067 Jun 6 12:14 smb
(Thus being writable for smbd!?)
The concerning entry in smb.conf is:
max log size = 1000
(obviously just exceeded)
I run Debian Potato with
ii samba 2.0.7-3.3 A LanManager like file and printer server fo
ii samba-common 2.0.7-3.3 Samba common files used by both the server a
ii samba-doc 2.0.7-3.3 Samba documentation.
ii swat 2.0.7-3.3 Samba Web Administration Tool
Samba runs as a daemon, not via inetd -- could there be a coherence?

I now have winbind uid = 10000 - 20000 in my smb.conf file. I still get the

This particular win98 box didn't have file and print sharing installed,
so I did install it. After I installed file and print sharing I wasn't
able to get a list of users. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling
anyway, still no user list. Anyone know what to try next???

Hi there,
I am getting the "The procedure number is out of range" error
when I try to log into the domain (samba running on IRIX) with a Win2K
box. I know that this is an error associated with 2.0.7 but I am
running 2.2.0 on the IRIX server and I actually have 3 2k boxes that can
log into it with no problem. When I try to add the next few machines to
the domain I get the above error.
e.g.
I have Box1... Box2.... etc through Box8.
1,2,3 work fine.... after that I get the error.
I go into Network ID and switch from WORKGROUP to DOMAIN
and it asks me for a username/passwd and I enter it
and I wait and when it says "welcome to the domain" on the other
machines I get the error on all the others.....
They are all identical machines....
Any thoughts? I really appreciate the help.

I'm not sure if the max log size parameter makes sense when using
--with-syslog. The parameter should probably be ignored if syslog
support is enabled (via ./configure and smb.conf)

Does anyone actually have winbind running on RHL 7.1?? Are there any issues

Hi,
We recently upgraded from 2.0.7 to 2.2.0. When using 2.0.7, we had some
passwords that were 9-10 characters long and used them with no problems.
After
upgrading to 2.2.0, the 9-10 character passwords no longer work
(basically,
anything over 8 characters didn't work). After some investigation, we
found that if a
password existed that was over 8 characters, it worked. But if we
created a new password
over eight characters, it wouldn't work. Or if we changed an existing 10
character
password to a different password over 8 characters long, it wouldn't
work. In
summary, passwords had to be 8 characters or less to be used reliably
with samba.
Can anyone explain what's happening? Did something with password length
change in samba 2.2.0?

Hi, I added several commands for get file restarting at end of
localfile. These commands are copied from netkit-ftp.
It's very useful when download big files from internet. :-)

I use precompiles packages of the Debian dietribution (and I'd like to
avoid compiling my own :-) What parameters can I change in smb.conf?
--with-syslog changes a default value, I guess!?
(Why doesn't max log size make sense? -- the files grow anyway, I think...)

If you are using Sun CC, make sure that you organise your PATH such that
you end up running /opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc in preference to /usr/ucb/cc.
The latter instance of the compiler links against the 4BSD "source
compatibility" libraries in preference to the native system libraries.

Hi,
What I would do, if you must use the NT PDC, is to convert you samba PDC to
a member of the NT domain, then use domain authentication. That way, you
won't need to continue the ongoing password replication. You'll have to
create all your current samba accounts into the NT domain once, then that's
it. Of course, you'll still have to maintain a valid Unix account, for each
NT account.

We have happy 5000 Samba users I'd like to stuff into an NT PDC (current;y
having only 200-some users), to be followed by ongoing password replication
from samba to the NT PDC. It's a long story why I want to do something that
stupid but I think it's the only technically correct choice given that
samba won't support interdomain trusts for a while.
The pwdump readme says:
As this code decrypts the obfuscication step in the NT password
database it may be reversed, allowing a lanman and md4 hash to be
written into the NT registry for a user account. This would allow a
UNIX/Samba box to be the master repository for user account details,
and the account passwords to be replicated and 'brute forced' into the
NT password database, bypassing the rather baroque NT API mechanisms.
This code doesn't attempt to do this however, this is left as an
'exercise to the reader' (or an enterprising university somewhere :-).
Has anyone done this, or will we be the first? It doesn't look terribly
difficult but I'd rather not duplicate efforts.
Are there other tools out there to do something similar, wearing any color
hat?

Make sure 'syslog only = no' (which is the default).
Of course, I could be guessing wrong about the root
of the problem. :-)

Samba should not be rotating files out from under
the syslogd daemon. Not our responsisbility.
Make sense?

You have hit the nail on the head---I hadn't fully appreciated the
extent of the caching. Removing the "nt smb support = no" line, restarting
samba (actually, sending a SIGHUP to re-read the conf file), and remapping
the shares on my Win95/98 machines does solve the problem. (I had to log
off and log on again to the Win98 machine to see the previously missing
files.) Thanks for the help.
Note that I introduced the "nt smb support = no" to solve the same
problem described in "2.0.6: file timestamps acting strange - even with
patch." by NelsonJP at genrad.com on 2000-03-10. I'll try running Samba 2.2.0
to see if this timestamp problem has gone away, in which case the "nt smb
support = no" line will not be needed.
The presence or not of the "nt smb support = no" line in my
samba-1.9.18p4-sunos5.6 conf file seems to have no affect on which files are
listed. At some stage I will build samba-2.2.0 on SunOS 5.6 and see what
happens.

Here is one observation I have made. When I deleted my share,
[test], on
the Windows 95 system and added nt smb support = no to my globals
and
restarted samba, I had several files disappear. I know that file
names
do get cached and will remain cached unless the chare is removed and
remapped. Can you delete or have you already deleted your [users2]
or
[users6] share and remap them after removing nt smb support = no
from your
smb.conf files and restarting samba?

We have already found this problem that ...
A share name with over 13 characters is not available against Windows
9x.
Also a share name with over 12 characters is not available against
Windows NT/2000.
Here is a quick hack that we use for Samba 2.0.9 Japanese Edition.
This patch truncates these share names and write a warning message.

OK, this is going to be a member file server. Right now I'm running Samba
2.2.0 on RedHat 7.1 but I could run the latest (TNG) build if that helps.
There is only one domain the one the Samba server is in and is a member of.

a domain member server, or what? Which release of Samba or Samba-TNG?
Is there another domain besides the one your Samba server is in? If

Sorry to keep bothering the List, but I'm still having problems with the Samba/Windows/UNIX password issue. Using RH Linux 7.0, with Samba 2.0.7, configured as shown below.

When I add a new user, I provide them an initial password and they login and get to their shares without problem. They can also Telnet to the Samba server, login to Linux, and use their home directory just fine. I would then like them to change that initial password to a password of their choosing. I can't find any reference to the steps that a Windows user must follow to change passwords from the Windows PC.
What I need to know, to help troubleshoot my particular situation, are the exact steps a Win95 user would need to take to have all passwords (Samba/Windows/UNIX) the same (i.e. run program abc, then do xyz at the Samba server, run applet so-and-so in Control Panel, etc, etc). Assume that Win95 has been patched to use encrypted passwords.

Why must they be root to read the files? Can't you give them non-root
accounts on the box and set the permissions on the logfiles so their
group have read access?
You can install samba, but it is certainly not the only way.
If they don't need to look at the logfiles "live", then you could simply
mail them or copy them from the production machine to their machines (or a
machine that you can give them some kind of access to).
On a local network, a script doing:
% smbclient //machine/share -some_options -c put logfile
will copy the file to the given windows share.
Over the Internet you could do:
% scp logfile user at machine:~/incoming
where machine is a different machine that they can have a non-root account
on.

If you want that server to be a SMB server (windows filesharing, makes

Samba has been installed onto a Sun sparc server bu I have not been able to
connect to the sharedrives. The SA who performed this installation is new to
installing Samba and does not have a feel as to what the problem might be.
I can connect to the sharedrive only with a PC loaded with Win2000 by
passing the Unix userid/password. I cannot connect on any of the Win95 PCs
and unfortunately all of the users have Win95 installed. The setup desired
was to be able to have all the user's connected without passing
userid/password and hopefully not having to create a user account on the
server.
We currently have Samba running on PC loaded with Linux that the users have
access to. The SA who installed this unfortunately have moved on and cannot
provide insight into what we need.
I have been viewing the documentation for Samba installation but cannot find
anything for installation on a Unix platform.
Is there a solution available which I cannot find in the online
documentation?

FYI:
Samba has been working pretty much perfectly for us with NT for
accessing clearcase vobs from a Sun E450 running Solaris 2.7.
Recently, however, we've started having some strange problems with a
couple of machines that we've moved on to Win2K. Things work for a
while, and then we get lots of these errors:
[2001/06/11 12:55:15, 0] lib/debug.c:reopen_logs(335)
Unable to open new log file /usr/local/samba/var/log.othello: No such file or directory
[2001/06/11 12:55:15, 0] lib/username.c:map_username(87)
can't open username map /usr/local/samba/lib/mapfile. Error No such file or directory
and life on the Win2K box is pretty confused. Has anyone seen this?
Got any ideas on how to resolve it? The files that it claims are not
there, in fact are there!
We were using 2.0.7, and so I tried moving to 2.2.0, but that didn't
help.

Hi.
I'm writing about the issue of the option 'max connections' in samba 2.2.0
I have downgraded to 2.0.7 because of this issue and now I really need to
have samba 2.2.x running in my production server.
So, my cuestion is: can I download a patch for 2.2.0 that resolve this
issue?
Or should I dowload the source via CVS?
If I should download the source code via CVS, is there any
"nightly build" of the CVS?

WE are on a HP9000 HPUX 10.20
We have had problems using office products Word and Excel as well as Oracle Forms Developer running on W2K while accessing files located on HP-UX workstations via Samba. Some files open properly, others generate errors like this one from Word: 'The instruction at "0x300b9dbe" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".' This error occurred when attempting to open the file. When the same files are on an NT share, or local on the W2K PC, no errors occur. This problem started after we upgraded our PC to Windows 2000.

Hi All,
I am using cvs HEAD version (6/7/01) of SAMBA on Linux system and have
problems with authentications of users. I use a domain environment and I
added my Linux system to be part of the domain.
Unfortunately, I discovered many problems and I am not sure if this is my
stupid configuration or understanding or it is not quite working at the
present time.
Below is my status and I would be very to happy to hear what did I do wrong.
I will be glad to help in coding and debugging or tracing different
scenarios if needed.
What is the status of winbindd as it is on cvs HEAD anyway? Is in any other
cvs tag to check out or other place to get better version of winbindd?
Here is the list of my issues:
1.
Winbindd seems to work OK as a daemon in general, I did get memory
allocation failed but it continues. Then I keep getting other errors depend
of what I do and as soon as I get major error all applications that suppose
to contact winbindd are failing.
When I run wbinfo -g it works OK but when I run wibinfo -u it failed big
time, the daemon still alive but I cannot even execute another wbinfo -g
after that. I must kill the daemon and rerun it.
Running getent group seems to work OK but give me also user names and only
the first 3 groups. Running anything after that failed.
Running getent passwd failed and running anything after that failed too.
2.
Trying to access shares.
I tried only win2000 and win98 clients and here are the results:
