No subject

I will get a smbd process started. (If this is incorrect please let me know 
;)

But this morning I did a quick ps -ax on my machine and found *two* smbd -D 
in the process list. But as far as I know there is no connection to the 
samba server right now.

I did connect to and disconnect from the server yesterday but I would think 
that that connection would have been released by now.

Can anyone explain to me why I have two processes? Is this normal?

Good evening,

My name is Martin Minogue and I have been fighting with Samba for a while
now.  My issue is this.  I have an NT Server running IIS 4.0, its the
Primary Domain Controller, and is running a bunch of Active Server Pages
that I have written.  The Linux box is running Red Hat Linux 6.2 and the
release of Samba that came preinstalled with the OS.

I was running a set of chat rooms on the NT Server until recently.  As the
license code that I purchased was for the Linux version of the chat software
I moved the chat rooms over to the Linux machine.  This created a problem.
The files that are generated for each room (which are simple text files) are
what is used by an ASP document to build a list of the users who are online
and in each active room.

Problem:  Now that I have moved the chat rooms over to the Linux box those
files are now stored on the Linux hard drive and not on the NT Server so I
can no longer build my user list for my customers.  So I read up on Samba
and after a huge struggle, and trying to get it to become a domain member, I
went back to "security=user" and now can connect to the share on the NT
Server as root.  But the active server page documents cannot access the
files, even though the share is mapped as a network drive now.  The issue
seems to be that the internet guest account (IUSR_WWW) doesn't have the
access privileges to even open and read the contents of those files on the
Linux share.

This also creates another problem with me being able to see the room logs
when there are security issues or a matter of harrasement going on in one of
my rooms.  I desperately need to figure out how to make this work correctly
so that the active server pages can get to and read each of the files that
are on the share.

Please help.  I am desperate.

We also have the 'problem' that the auto-refresh (can be forced by F5 in
win2k explorer) doesn't always work that good in Windows Explorer.. Hitting
F5 does the job, but still it's a different behavior then NT or Win2k native
servers..

We're using Samba 2.0.7 on a Debian 2.2 Linux system using kernel 2.2.17.
Sometimes when we copy files to the samba share from one of our Win2k Pro
client, we could not see the file appear at another Win2k Pro client. We can
only see the file appear again in about 15mins later.

Our client with same system config has similar problem while some of their
files are completely invisible but we can find them out inside the Linux
box.

Is there some sort of caching for the directory content either at the samba
or Win2k Pro? Or it is a bug for the 2.0.7 release?

Hi,

On some of our NT4 machines, we get the following error, being recorder in
event log:
Changing machine account password for account MACHINE-NAME$ failed with the
following error:
The handle is invalid.

We are using both NT4 and windows 2000 machines but until now only found
this error on Nt4 (sp6a) machines.

Samba version is Samba2.2.0 release.

What error messages do you get? Does printing form linux work? Print

commonly this is /var/spool/samba. It should not be the spool 
directory of lpd. Samba spools the print job to path = ... and then 
issiues the print command. What are the permissions on this

In the Samba 2.0 series the directory notification functions don't work
particularly well.  If you have a Linux 2.4 kernel and use Samba 2.2
this should work must better.  Tridge added kernel based directory
notification sometime in the 2.3 kernel series and the associated 
support to Samba.  

If you run ./configure and see a line like "checking for kernel change 
notify support... yes" then the new directory notification code is
being used.

What are owner and permissions of these files on the linux box? Is 
IUSR_WWW a NT or a linux user? If it is a NT user, create it on linux 
as well and use it to connect form NT to samba. If it is a linux 
user, it may be that the guest should not have access to the 
log/accounting files due to security reasons. Think about it and if 
you feel confortable you may change the permissions to allow IUSR_WWW 
access to the files on linux. Or use user on NT that has access to 
the files.

An other point: I have never used a user name in capital letters. I 
could imagine that you need the "map user" (?) option in smb.conf for 
this to work.

Dear all,

Oh... too bad. Does it means we have to upgrade BOTH our kernel to 2.4 and
Samba to 2.2?
Why the samba directory notification needs kernel 2.4 support? I hope it
could be fixed by simply
upgrade samba to 2.2.

Anyone can confirm this?

In the Samba 2.0 series the directory notification functions don't work
particularly well.  If you have a Linux 2.4 kernel and use Samba 2.2
this should work must better.  Tridge added kernel based directory
notification sometime in the 2.3 kernel series and the associated
support to Samba.

If you run ./configure and see a line like "checking for kernel change
notify support... yes" then the new directory notification code is
being used.

Hi Martin,

There are a few things that I would try to get around the problem you have
with getting your ASP pages to access those text files (potential solutions
presented in random order!).

1. Try using FTP instead to transfer the text files accross from the linux
box to the NT Server. You said you are running IIS on your NT server (thus
FTP should also be there), why not make a cron job on the linux box that
uses FTP commands to periodically "put" the files into a selected FTP
virtual directory on your NT server. Then your ASP program could manipulate
them off the local hard drive of the NT Server.

2. A super elegant solution might be to use the Samba support for DFS
(Distributed File Systems). WARNING: I have not played around with DFS and
Samba myself though I am sure there are other people in this list that know
all about it. What I can suggest is that you might like to change the
version of Samba that came with pre-installed with your RH Linux system
since it will be a fairly old version by now and I am pretty sure it won't
support DFS.

3. You could also potentially use smbmount and mount part of the filesystem
on the NT Server, and then create the text files in there or move them via a
script to that mounted point (thus on the NT Server's hard drive).

4. How about migrating the "bunch" of ASP pages from ASP to PHP or PERL so
that you run them in your linux system instead under Apache maybe? Just a
thought :-)

I am not sure if just mapping a drive would solve your problems (assuming
you work around permissions etc), as the drive mapping happens on user
sessions whereas ASP pages are run at system level. I don't think that the
ASP pages will ever "see" the mapped drive (if anyone knows different please
let me know).

My name is Martin Minogue and I have been fighting with Samba for a while
now.  My issue is this.  I have an NT Server running IIS 4.0, its the
Primary Domain Controller, and is running a bunch of Active Server Pages
that I have written.  The Linux box is running Red Hat Linux 6.2 and the
release of Samba that came preinstalled with the OS.

I was running a set of chat rooms on the NT Server until recently.  As the
license code that I purchased was for the Linux version of the chat software
I moved the chat rooms over to the Linux machine.  This created a problem.
The files that are generated for each room (which are simple text files) are
what is used by an ASP document to build a list of the users who are online
and in each active room.

Problem:  Now that I have moved the chat rooms over to the Linux box those
files are now stored on the Linux hard drive and not on the NT Server so I
can no longer build my user list for my customers.  So I read up on Samba
and after a huge struggle, and trying to get it to become a domain member, I
went back to "security=user" and now can connect to the share on the NT
Server as root.  But the active server page documents cannot access the
files, even though the share is mapped as a network drive now.  The issue
seems to be that the internet guest account (IUSR_WWW) doesn't have the
access privileges to even open and read the contents of those files on the
Linux share.

This also creates another problem with me being able to see the room logs
when there are security issues or a matter of harrasement going on in one of
my rooms.  I desperately need to figure out how to make this work correctly
so that the active server pages can get to and read each of the files that
are on the share.

Please help.  I am desperate.

After looking at this some more. the print job is getting on the spool
but...

Something is preventing the daemon form starting. So this is really an
lpr problem not samba. If anyone here knows a thing or two about lpr???

I do have msaccess on samba.
I had a lot of problems. I disabled oplocks and think that it helped. Now I
am able to open the same mdb file for more than one clients but I still am
not able to open it twice from the same PC (note that the mdb file that I
open has tables only - no forms, reports, macros etc). Get my smb.conf also.

Hello folks,

DId compile and install the new kernel 2.4.5 with smbfs of course ;).
Can anybody pls tell me what this stuff in the logs mean?

Dear Jason,

put the location of your C-compiler binary in your path variable or
download C-compiler at http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html and install
it. But don't forget. It should be in your path.
After that you should delete the config.cache file in the
samba-2.2.0/source folder.

Try to ./configure again.

I've been having a look into the new Samba 2.2.  I see that there's
something called Winbind.  Lots of other curious things as well.

Can anyone point me at some docs to do with this ?  Also, can someone
tell me what it does ?

In samba 2.2.0 winbind does nothing.  Its broke, don't bother.  If
winbind is something you want, you will need the stomach to download the
HEAD CVS branch as directed on the samba home page.  

In any case, winbind provides user and group mapping from NT to unix, ie
you can log into the unix box with an NT username and password, all the
details are retrieved via the PDC.

Hello all,

I've setup a linux system with 2 IP-address (eth0 -> 139.17.166.125
[GMT25] and etho:0 -> 139.17.141.125 [GE25])
It works fine. You can make a ping to these addresses.
Now I want to setup to 2 vitual samba servers, binded at one of each
IP-address.

Here is the  smb.conf

I want to see each samba server in it's workgroup.

Hello all,

I want to setup a share that is writable 
only for certain filenames.

Something like

veto files = /*/ 
allow files = /backup*/

would do the job but AFAIK there is no "allow files" option.
Or is it possible to invert the "veto files" list of files?

hi all,
1)i recently downloaded samba souce from samba a
mirror site .i am running a mandrake 7.2 system.when i
build from this sources using spec of mandrake under
packaging/mandrake i could not get
addtosmbpass,smbadduser binaries in my
samba-2.0.2.rpm.
clearly he has hashed smbadduser patch in 2.2.0 spec.
can any one help me how to get this thing done 
i think it happens in the case of redhat also .

2)i am using linux kernel 2.2.17-14 with smbfs module
in it.i am using samba -2.2.0 on this system .when i
am trying to mount my homes share through komba or
xsmbrowser or by commandline i am getting error like :

" session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad
password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or
Session
Setup are invalid.)
SMB connection failed."

it is able to mount some shares of windows95 machine
in my network.

can anybody help me in these problems???

Hello,

I was asked to set up a samba and web server to allow certain staff to be
able to set up and modify their own web pages. The web/samba server is
running on a Sun solaris box, and the staff will access it all via NT (or
W2K) machines (pc's, laptops or whatever). I was told that samba can
authenticate the users via the domain controllers.

However, we do not have any logon accounts on the domain controllers. Users
login at an NT workstation via some other software (from Zenworks?) to the
local novell netware 4 servers. These then automatically create a local
account for the user on the workstation just for their login period. Second
problem is that communication via the workstation and novell server is via
IPX - tcp/ip won't happen until all the servers are running netware 5 (if
windows 2000/ads hasn't taken over completely here).

The question is can samba communicate (i.e. authenticate) with a novell
netware 4 (nds) server? I thought about (and this works) authenticating the
user against the workstation itself, but the overall security seems weak
since what prevents someone creating a (valid) account on the workstation
themselves and then accessing the samba server?

I've checked the archives for the past several months and found extremely
little about netware/novell, and there seems to be nothing in the supplied
software/docs. So I'm guessing the overall answer is no, but thanks in
advance for any help and suggestions.

I think i found a bug, preventing me to add NT groups to the acl of a 
directory on a samba share from W2K.

linux 2.4.4-acl
samba head from todays cvs
W2K SP1 as pdc

After changing the U to a G it works for me :)

Hm, some redhat versions ship with an unstable lpd. Try stopping lpd, 
deleting everything in the spool directory, restarting it. May be 
update (or downgrade) your lpd. It's easy using rpm. Check if lp0 is 
the right deviece, try lp1 (this may change with the kernel version).

Just a thought:
May be solaris can interakt with novell (with out samba). I know that 
novell can be a NFS-Server. But for the web server a novell NFS-
client would probably be what you are looking for. May be it's worth 
to ask sun and novell about it.

If you take linux as web server: Linux can talk ipx, but don't ask me 
in what state the programms are and where to find them.

if i uncomment

or include = /etc/samba/conf.piotr
everything works OK,
but %G or %U doesn't work.

I tried copy file conf.piotr to
conf.PIOTR and still bad.

Any suggestions?

Hmm, it is a thought (using nfs). I knew nothing about samba when I was
asked to start this, and I know nothing about nfs really since we do not use
it. So a bit more learning I guess :-) The problem may be that there are
many novell servers, and since the staff could be using any one (or more) of
them, we would have to enable nfs on them all.

Yes, we have a linux box running ipx, but all it does is, in effect, an
ipx 'ping' to see if the servers are present. That works fine actually :-)

I have my PDC in my /etc/hosts and lmhosts.  I followed the winbind
man page, and I installed a working version of winbind.
(I am hoping that with each install there is no need to perform any
uninstall of the previous version.)
I got everything configured to what I *think* is right, but when I ran:

smbpasswd -j DOMAIN -r PDC

I got:
"Unknown parameter encoutered" for  winbind separator, winbind cache time,
template shell, template homedir, winbind uid, winbind gid (all the things
listed in the man page that I was supposed to add to my smb.conf file)
and then:
cli_net_auth2: Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
cli_nt_setup_creds: auth2 challenge failed
modify_trust_password: unable to setup the PDC credential to machine
NAUTILUS
change_trust_account_password

I don't know if it matters, but I already used this command earlier to join
the domain and it joined successfully.

I still get "host unknown" when I try to connect to anything via web
browser.
I cannot connect to the Linux box AT ALL now from NT.
Is there some user mapping I need to do?

Any one have any ideas?

Hello All !

I was finally able to get Samba 2.2.0 to install on 
my Intel based RedHat 7.1 system and I think I have 
SWAT properly configured but when I try to log into 
SWAT I get this error:

401 Bad Authorization
username or password incorrect

Am I using the wrong account (root) or should I be 
using some other account??

Do you have the PDC pointing towards the Samba WINS server?

Several parameter defaults changed from 1.9 to 2.0.  The security
parameter in particular changed from 'share' to 'user' by default.
Make sure you get which one you want when upgrading.  Also the
'os level' changed from 0 to 20 by default.

You are using 'security = domain' and the PDC said,
"I don't knoiw any user named root".  Maybe you have
a username map configured?

Hello everyone,
	I am attempting to print to a Xerox Document Center 332 using samba.  I

Just wondering ...
Did you ever get a chance to look into the problem I was having with
IMPRINTS being unable to deal with Microsoft CAB files?

Also ...
Are there bug fixes in the works which address print driver upload problems
with Samba2.2? 
Like many others on the list, I've had numerous problems. It appears that my
ntdrivers.tdb file became corrupt, or merely unusable, at one point. As a
result, I've attempted to rebuild my server no less than 4 times, and each
time I encounter strange problems.
I know that bugs related to "rpcclient" and "large printcap files" have been
addressed, but I've tangled with some other bits of weirdness. Like, the W2K
client complaining that there are "no drivers associated" with a particular
printer, despite the fact that when browsing PRINT$ it shows up as an "HP
DeskJet blahblahblah". I've also had W2K clients unable to access "printer
properties" on certain printers. Any attempt at getting to "printer
properties" produces a Windows fatal error window ... and the application
locks up.
After reading your description of the bug related to "rpcclient", I felt
that my problems may somehow be related. Any thoughts?

I've got a couple of questions concerning samba's locking mechanisms.

First, where does samba store file locks infomation. I tried viewing
files and changes in /usr/local/samba/var/locks directory but the
information doesn't seem to be going there. I also checked /var/lock
but no luck there either. Locks were showing up on swat, but no
changes came to files in those directories .

Is loking information supposed to be stored in STATUS..LCK, because as
files are locked and unlocked, STATUS..LCK doesn't seem to change.

Is it possible that files are only locked by a process and that locks
information is stored virtualy?

 The reason why im asking these questions is that we need to make 2+
samba machines aware of the files each of them has locked. Why?
because we use more than one samba machine as gateway to our main file
server.

By the way were using samba 2.0.9, and will eventualy upgrade to
2.2.0.
Any help or ideas you guy(and gals) could provide would be greatly
apreciated.

Hi,
I have a little problem I would like get fixed.
Whenever I move files from my windows box to the Samba server, the date and
time stamp is inherrited. Instead I would rather have the files that I moved
to the Samba server have the actual time stamp of the time I created the
file on the Samba machine, and not the time stamp of the creation on the
windows box.

If this sounds unclear.... Let's say I downloaded foo.zip three weeks ago to
the windows box. Today I decide to move it to the Samba Server. On the Samba
Server foo.zip will appear to be three weeks old.
I am using scripts that check for new files on the server, and would like
foo.zip to show up as a new file, since I just moved it there.

I could not find any configuration option for this, how can I configure
this?

I am running
FreeBSD 4.3, Samba 2.0.9, xinetd-2.1.8.pre14, ....  on a 400 MgHz Pentium II
with 128MB Ram.
the windows machines are running windows 98 SE

I greatly appreciate any help!

Use smbpasswd to add users to samba's smbpasswd file.
Also note that many changes went into the Mandrake spec
file after the release of 2.2.0.  Check in the SAMBA_2_2
cvs tree for the latest version.

Was LDAP and Samba ever addressed?  It's possible I missed it but if not I
really would like to know what the status is.

Do you mean to support dce/dfs or were you trying for --wth-msdfs?
I don't think the dce/dfs code is being actively maintained.

I'm not sure what version of Netware you are using, but if memory serves me
correctly starting with version 4.11 there was an LDAP server available for
Netware (I know there is for sure in 5.x because we use it, but you said you
were not using 5.x).  If you have that available you may be able to
authenticate against that with both your user accounts using nss-ldap/pam-ldap
and with Samba (using an older version from like Oct. 1999, just search the web
for LDAP and Samba you should find the needed material).

Hi all
I have a mixed network:

Win2K server with around 150 NT4 w/st clients, domain kevigs.co.uk;
NT4 (SP6a) server with around 12 Win 9x clients, domain admin

IP info is:  servers are 10.28.193.1 (W2k) and 10.28.193.2 (NT4);
             w/st are 10.28.195.x (W2k is running DHCP)
             printers (jet direct) are 10.28.194.x
Subnet mask is 255.255.240.0

I have added a Linux box (host name wigwam) running Mandrake (7.1), Apache
(as an intranet server) and Samba.  IP is 10.28.193.6

Intranet server runs fine, can be accessed from any w/st (via
http://wigwam... etc).

Samba appears to be running ok - testparm and diagnosis all ok - BUT:
