have an Expect-style chat with it, according to the passwd chat string.  The
chat string is correct, assuming passwd runs as root (which the
documentation for "unix password sync" tells us it will).

The problem?  passwd is never run.  Even with passwd chat debug on and log
level turned up to 100, we see no messages in any logs that any attempt to
call passwd is made.  So, it seems to us like this option does absolutely
nothing.

If anyone can give us any advice on either one of these, it would really
help us out.  We have been struggling with this for too long and it does not
seem to work at all.
