[Samba] Samba file retrieve - extremely slow... waits between file retrie ves

We are having lots of problems trying to retrieve large amount of files
from a samba share.
 
Our configuration is as follows:
 
Windows 2000 server to Samba running on an ASM server (running SAM-FS).
The files are being fetched from disk or tape depending on the file
location. The tape drives are not busy and the disk is very fast. But
the files are not coming back to windows fast enough i.e. copies a few
files and waits for a few minutes and the copies a few files and waits
again. 
 
We would like to talk to a person who may be able to help us. We need
help...
