Debian has samba 2.2.8 , unfortunately not where you would expect to be
and at this site there are si more information/README :
http://people.debian.org/~vorlon/samba/

What you really need is samba stable 2.2.8 and this package
http://people.debian.org/~peloy/samba/debian.tar.gz
to build your own package.
