[Samba] "Failed To Initialise Messages Database"

I'm having trouble tracking down the exact problem here.  I'm running
Samba 2.2.8 on Mandrake Linux 9.0 (had the same problem with 2.2.7 as
well), with nothing out of the ordinary in the installation.  I can run
nmbd just fine, but when I try to run smbd I see the message "failed to
initialise messages database" in the log file.  Am I perhaps running
into a locking/permissions problem with messages.tdb?  Where would that
file be located?  Please keep in mind I'm something of a novice here.
