try to use 'pdbedit' that comes with the samba package.

there is an option to import an 'old' smbpasswd-file into the new
auth-source.

try this (it works perfectly for me) but you MUST have configured the LDAP
stuff in the smb.conf file and set the bind-pw for the LDAP server with
smbpasswd (please see the manpage for the correct switch to make it).

pdbedit -i /path/to/old/smbpasswd

thats all. for every imported or ignored entry you get an output from
pdbedit.
