[Samba] Win2k joining samba hosted PDC

Set up: 
Linux 7.2 kernel 2.4.9-34 with samba 2.2.1a-4
Windoze win2k SP3

I have tried to get a win2k laptop to join a samba hosted PDC and have come
up short.

I have the machine account:

the samba root:

and the machine in /etc/passwd entry:

On the laptop I get "unknown username or bad password" when trying to join
the domain.

I have tried to delete all entries, restart samba, add back the entries,
restart samba, reboot laptop and still to no avail.

here is the info from the machine log, where is says "end of file from
client". I have no idea what this means, any help?
