The problem is NFS *requires* that all userids be the same, everywhere.
This isn't always practical or convenient.  It also relies on IP addresses
for authentication, which is asking for trouble.  (Not that SMB is all that
secure either.)

Doesn't AFS require you to have your on-disk filesystem in its own special
format?
