[Samba] lost and confused

Gavin,

Mandrake typically includes Webmin as a standard piece of their
installation software. Webmin makes bringing up Samba INCREDIBLY easy and
simple to do. Read up a little on Webmin at www.webmin.com and give it a
go. Using Webmin should help you get Samba up and running without an
issue.

However, if you feel that you have Samba up and running fine there is
something that you can do to test it while directly on the server.

	Open up a terminal window.

Make sure you are logged in with a user account that has been configured
in Samba to have access to the shares. (ie., with an entry in the
smbpasswd file.)

At the prompt type in "smbclient -L localhost"

This will provide you with some limited information about the server,
after you type in your password for accessing the server.

I have a feeling that you might be missing one or more pieces in your
smb.conf file and perhaps also the user accounts in the smbpasswd file.

Could you copy and paste your smb.conf file into an E-mail and also
explain what you did to setup the user accounts for Samba use? With that
information, most everyone here should be able to assist you.

Subject: [Samba] lost and confused

Dear List,

I'm BRAND NEW to samba but I have RTFM, checked the samba for dummies
book and
a host of other texted docs and I'm still lost. Is there a site the can
explain setting up samba without all the bla bla bla.. I have a school in

japan and I have samba running on my Mandrake linux 8.2 prosuite box. I
want
my other boxes (linux and windows) to 1. use the printer and 2. students
can
access their folders on the server. at the moment, none of my boxes can
access the server files or printer, the windows boxes do not show a
connection to the server on the network.. My server box also doubles as
my
firewall.
I did some firewall checking and found out that ports 136 and 139 are
stealthed to the internet, could this also be a problem.. (server is also

blocking the win connects) if more information is need please let me know

a.s.a.p!
TIA

Gavin
