Your setup sounds very strange. Why not use Winbind for domain logon, to
avoid the password dialog?
Anyway, to force it, simply put a "net use \\server" in the login script of
the users. This will then establish a connection at login time and prompt
people for username & password.
I had a similar problem of net use drive mappings failing at login on Win2k
machines. I fixed it by putting the net use commands right at the beginning
of the script, then do some other stuff, and finally map drives (net use s:
....).
