Can you try to reproduce this against a pristince source 
version of 2.2.6 built on a SuSE 8.0 box ?  I need to find out 
if this is a SuSE package issue or a generic 2.2.6 issue.

Also try to get a backtrace is gdb (see "panic action" in 
smb.conf(5)).
