[Samba] "smbstatus" reporting strangeness

I've recently added the following line to inetd.conf, to allow clients
to connect at Port 445:

microsoft-ds stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/smbd smbd -d 1

That works, but the connections that are started that way produce
the machine name "smbd" in the output of "smbstatus". The machines
that connect to the main listener (at port 139, started with
"/usr/local/sbin/smbd -D -d 1" list the name of the connecting
machine. The first two shown below connected at 139, and the
third at 445.

Samba version 2.2.4
Service uid gid pid machine
-----------------------------------
IPC$ nobody nobody 10007 uspeisj (167.116.93.40) Mon May 13 16:02:37 2002
IPC$ nobody nobody 10216 uspeisj (167.116.93.40) Mon May 13 16:21:52 2002
pctools nobody nobody 10265 smbd (167.116.91.226) Mon May 13 16:25:07 2002

No locked files

Given that the IP address of the client is known, why isn't it reported
as the "machine"?
