At the very least, you must ugrade to the latest Samba, (2.2.3a).. I've
seen a large number of complaints on the list regarding problems with
Foxpro databases. You might also want to try disabling oplocks, as they
can sometimes cause problems on 'leaky' networks. (As for what
constitutes a leaky network, I have no idea, but I find it to be a good
first troubleshooting step.)

Hi,
I have 5 Win98 clients connecting to a network disk. They are running an
old DOS application that accesses a Foxpro database on that disk. Last
week, the server was Win2k. The Win2k box got a virus. So this week I
changed it to SuSE 7.3 running Samba 2.2.1a.
Now various clients crash randomly, about 3-20 times per day total. This
is causing a gradual loss in confidence in the Samba server. There were
no crashes when the server was Win2k.
Any suggestions appreciated. I append a section of
/var/log/samba/log.smbd and my samba.conf file. Thanks!
By the way, no clients are printing to the box. We thought it was
related to the printer so I moved the printer to another machine.
