[Samba] samba 2.2.3a too many processes

I don't quite know why this is happening, but smbd has 200 processes for
maybe a few dozen users.

The system becomes insanely slow and load averages are 163.93, 161.58, 150.62

Is there a way to limit the number of smbd processes per user?  or is this
not wise?  What else can be done?
