The difference is the environment of the processes. smbmount picks a
username from $USER if none is given. I don't know if that is the trigger,
but I think so.
A difference between smbclient and smbmount was corrected for 2.2.2.
(I think, it is fixed in 2.2.2 anyway).
smbclient attempts to connect with username/password ""/"" if the given
username + password fails. smbmount didn't and that would fail for guest
in startup scripts.
I haven't seen any mention of samba versions in use, but if it isn't 2.2.2
or 2.2.3a then upgrade.
