hi!

ok then, i will trie with a shorter name.
yes i did it like you wrote, first useradd machinename$ and then smbpasswd
-a -m machinename and i also enabled the account manually (smbpasswd -e
machinename) to be sure it is active but it did not help.

about more than 8 characters: i don't really know it, but in my opinion
generally it's better to use names shorter than 8 did you create a unix-user
with the name of the client and added a $- character like chcriofpc001$ then
initialize the client with the following line: smbpasswd -m -a CLIENTNAME$

usually, it should work now ;-)
