Why don't you put

deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian unstable main non-free contrib

into your sources list and

cd /usr/src
apt-get source samba
cd samba-2.2.4/
dpkg-builpackage -b -rfakeroot

This works fine in woody - you first have to check if the
build-dependencies are satisfied, but they can be apt-getted as woody
binary packages.

If you're still in potato, you'll have to do the same for libcupsys2-dev
which is not in potato (I think the name of the source package is
cupsys), but I think the rest is o.k.

After you've downloaded the debianized sources, in samba_2.2.4-1.dsc
(the last digit may change).
