[Samba] testparm error

After installing Samba 2.2.5 from source and editing my smb.conf, I get the
following error when running testparm:

Load smb config files from /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file
"/usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf":
        Success
Error loading services.

smbd and nmbd will not start, and I can't imagine the problem here. Smb.conf
has permissions set to 644, owned by root. I compiled samba on a Red Hat 7.2
system with a 2.4.7-10 kernel.

Help!
