Samba 2.2.5 re-compiled without choosing ldap support on Turbolinux WS V.8.

I am not able to authenticate users, either by
#smbclient //pinguin/public -U root%password
response:ERRSRV-ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in Tree Connect
or Session Setup are invalid)

or by trying to add a new samba account (system account exists)
#smbpasswd -a administrator

resonse:
ldap_open_connection:connection opened
fetch_ldap_pw:no ledap secret retrieved!
ldap_connect_system: Failed to retrieve password for from secret.tdb
Failed to add entry for user administrator.
Failed to modify password entry for user administrator.

The smbpasswd file was created from the system accounts by
#cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh >/usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd
and contains all the relevant entires.

secret.tdb is an empty file.

Why does samba look in secret.tdb and establish an ldap connection, when it
should not ??? Any suggestions ?
