[Samba] Samba shares not appearing for some time after creation

We run a number of Mandrake Linux Servers - versions
8.0 - 8.2 with Samba which comes with distrobution
when we change or add new shares the often do not
appear in network neighbourhood on NT clients and are
not accessable through sharename (\\server\share)
for some time after creation. /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb
reload
does not help. A complete restart of samba works, but
this
is a bit nasty if users have files open. Anyone know a
solution to this problem?
