Michael,
is there any chance that you have multiple ip addresses or interfaces
configured on your samba server, and samba is picking up a different ip addr
to bind to than the one you expect?  Perhaps you could try adding into your
smb.conf global section the following lines (as a test)
interfaces=<YOUR samba machine ip address/subnetmask>
bind interfaces only=yes

Nope.  I DID add the old address it was trying to the DC as a secondary
IP, but I don't see any change in samba, still says "no domain
controllers found"

This is related to me previous question of "could not check secret"
results. According to winbind, it contacts my DC, gets a positive name
query, and then tryes to send a packet to an IP address that hasn't been
around for years, then says "could not find any domain controllers".
And loops like that.  I've tried manually setting the domain controller
in the smb.conf, but no good.  Any ideas?  Places to look?  I've looked
through the WINS database and that address is nowhere to be found.
