Donna -

I beat my head against that problem for a while too. I'll bet you are
following the instructions from the O'Reilly "Using Samba" book. I
think the book is a little out of date in that regards. But then, I
don't fully understand what is going on under the covers there. I just
know what finally worked for me.

Follow the documentation that comes with Samba. Look in
"docs/htmldocs/DOMAIN_MEMBER.html" it gives better instructions for
joining the domain. Basically, DON'T add the samba server to the domain
before running the smbpasswd command. Instead, after you have setup
your smb.conf file but before starting the programs, run:
  smbpasswd -j (domain) -r (pdc name) -U <admin name>%<admin password>
This should add you to the domain and create your MACHINE.SID and
secrets.tdb files.

Hope this helps.
