Off Topic : Machine account passwords

This isn't a samba bug, I know, but I wonder if anyone has found a way of
getting an NT4 WKS machine to join the domain without changing profiles
about - This is the scenario :

Local profiles on the NT4 machines, (We specifically want this - our apps
are on the clients, so there's no advantage to roaming, but the process of
transferring files people put on the desktop causes huge network delays on
logon/off)

We had a server crash and rebuilt the linux server, including samba, but
the machines already had accounts in the domain. To leave the domain and
rejoin always moves local profiles about - i.e. my username is mranyard, my
profile directory is called mranyard. If I leave the domain and rejoin it,
my profile directory is mranyard.001

I have a work-round, which is to delete the machine accounts, which then
allows people to log on with their original account, with the error "No
domain controller found", but if there is an account, then it errors with
"account invalid" and doesn't let you in. Is there a way of resetting the
password back to the hash of the netbios name, so we can sync with the
server? Is there another way?

Thanks in advance
