Check your basic network functionality.  While many things work fine in
the SMB world on dodgy networks, if the client is dropping connections
then things get nasty.  The problem is that the client has oplocked the
file, dropped the connection (probably due to network level errors) and
then must wait for the server to wake up to this fact before it can
continue.

Well, thats my guess anyway...
