A possible alternative might be to use LPRng (if you're not already
using it).

A lot of the time spent doing an 'lpq' for a network printer is network
time, and standard 'lpd' talks to the network printer every time an
'lpq' is run.

In LPRng the 'lpd' maintains a copy of the status of the network printer
locally, so the 'lpq' command returns much, much quicker, especially if
a network printer is down.

Caveat: It's a while since I used LPRng, and I didn't exhaustively test
this behaviour, but if definately seemed to behave like that to me.
Very handy.
