smbtar problems

I am using a Redhat 7.2 with samba installed as a cheap backup server.  I can successfully mount the shares on the linux box, tar the files, and compress.  However, when I went to test the restore procedure using smbclient and "tar x "name of file to restore", I get the following messages, "abadoning restore  Abadoning Restore", and then I'm back at the smb client prompt.  Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
