Samba PDC question

Recently set up 2 machines 1) "PDC" for authentication, home directories,
profiles...
and 2) "File Server" for network shares with varying permissions for
different users.  Both Running Samba 2.2.2 compiled from source.  These are
the only "servers" on the network and I have like 10 "clients" all running
Win2K.

PDC using shadowed password.  /etc/passwd has entries for all my users and
/etc/group has a few groups for some management
File Server using shadowed password.  /etc/passwd and /etc/group have been
duplicated here without passwords or home dir's.

Security= user on PDC , Security= server with Password server = {PDC
IpAddress}
work ok

but when I switched to

Security= user on PDC , Security= domain with Password server = {PDC
IpAddress}
nothing authenticates the win boxes get an authentication dialogue but
nothing gets in

Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?
