Did you unpack the samba-2.2.2 package?  If you did, it should've
created subdirectories samba-2.2.2/docs.  Read the stuff in there. 
Basically, you go to samba-2.2.2/source, and do these steps:

./configure

make

make install


Which platform will you be running Samba on?  If it's Red Hat 7.x, read
this
http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-binaries/2001-May/000216.html. 
There's too much about the installation and configuration to write
here.  You can read it all in the docs.  It may be some work, but when
you get Samba running, it'll be like inventing the telephone.  Good
